An Odyssey into the Mystical Power of Traditional Raag Kirtan
'Sacred Raags & Voices' is a special kirtan program and workshop having live singing of traditional hymns in raag-based melodies. 'Raags' are a sacred, ancient musical science from the east, in which specific combinations of sound notes are used to sing mantras and shabads for devotion. When these raags are sung at the appropriate time and season, and aligned with a specific human emotion, they exponentially heighten the impact of the shabad (hymn) on the human mind, body and soul. Inspired by the Sikh scripture, Guru Granth Sahib (which has all its hymns encoded in ‘raags’), several hymns will be sung during the evening, providing a rare musical experience. Knowledge will be shared on the historical importance of raags in devotional music practices. We will also have a special spotlight on the well-known Guest Maestro, Mr. Ajay Jha, a traditional master of Raag-Naad, trained in India who has been singing devotional kirtan and teaching students for over three decades. A volunteer-based dinner/snacks will be served at the end of the evening.
